Each site on the Internet has a corresponding, unique numerical address used to identify its presence on the Internet. Those unique numerical addresses are known as IP addresses. The popularity of the Internet has resulted in a soon to be shortage of IP addresses. The IP address scheme traditionally used is known as IPv4, or "IP version 4". Because of the impending shortage of IPv4 IP addresses the Internet community has come up with the next generation of IP addressing scheme known as IPv6, or "IP version 6". Some quick history and information
First developed in 1978 and deployed in 1981, IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) provided the means by which each networked device could be connected and uniquely identified on the Internet. With number of possible devices and uses for the Internet it is no surprise that the number of possible devices is quickly exhausting the 4.3 billion possible IPv4 available IP addresses.
Once all available IPv4 addresses have been used IPv6 addresses will be the only available addressing method for Internet expansion.
IPv4 has 4,294,967,296 addresses, and is projected to run out of available spares around Q2 of 2011 or sooner.
IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) development started in 1993, and the first addresses were made available in 1999.
IPv6 can support up to 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 unique devices.
Adopting IPv6 is a big deal
